Turning the Pages: Manga for Elementary

A Talk by Monica Loas (Library/Media Specialist, Aldine ISD)

About this Talk

You may have heard of the word “manga” among elementary students, especially in recent years. But what is it exactly? Manga is generally used to describe comics originated in Japan, and over time, due to cultural globalization, extended its reach all over the world. Manga allows students who are considered reluctant readers and students who are English language learners and special education to be immersed in reading. There are many levels to manga, especially what to consider when developing a collection geared toward elementary students. In this presentation, educators will be able to gather tips on how to get started with manga while creating engaging lessons focusing on writing and storytelling.
